The MALORY MLR-G04 is a shielded-top in-ground well light designed for controlled uplighting with reduced direct glare. Its raised die-cast brass shield partially conceals the MR16 lamp from one viewing direction, helping reduce direct glare while maintaining upward accent illumination.
Ideal for illuminating trees, walls, columns, and other vertical landscape features, the G04 is especially useful near walkways, patios, seating areas, or other locations where glare control is preferred.

How to Choose a Suitable Transformer
Low voltage lighting systems require the use of a transformer to reduce the standard 120 volt power from ordinary household electricity to 12,13,14,and 15 volt needed to power low voltage fixtures.
The total wattage of all fixtures connected to one transformer must not exceed the wattage capacity of the transformer.
To determine the size of transformer needed in a low voltage lighting system, add up the wattage of all fixtures in system and then add 10% for low voltage cable and fixtures connections.
If the total load offixtures is too greateither divide the total load between 2 transformers or use a more powerful transformer.
Select a transformer with 20% higher capacity than total wattage of all fixtures in system, that allow you to add more fixtures later.

01 Where does the G04-2 work best?
The G04-2 is a grated-top in-ground well light designed for upward illumination where you want the fixture to stay visually low-profile while reducing direct glare.
It works especially well for:
- tree trunks and lower canopies
- stone columns
- textured walls
- architectural details
- large shrubs
- landscape features where an above-ground spotlight would be too visible
Because the light exits through the grated cover, the effect is more controlled than an open-top well light.
02 What does the grated top actually do?
The solid brass grate serves two purposes.
First, it helps reduce direct view of the lamp, especially when the fixture is installed near walkways, seating areas, or other locations where people may look toward the light.
Second, the grate offers some protection against larger debris and small stones falling directly onto the lamp area.
It does not make the fixture completely debris-proof, so leaves, soil, mulch, and sediment around the fixture should still be cleared periodically.
03 Does the G04-2 produce less light than an open-top well light?
Yes, slightly.
The grate physically blocks part of the upward beam, so the G02 will normally produce a more restrained output than an equivalent open-face well light using the same lamp.
That trade-off is intentional: you get better glare control and a less exposed light source.
If your priority is maximum unrestricted uplighting, an open-top well light may be more suitable. If your priority is a cleaner, more shielded appearance, the G02 is the better choice.
04 Can the light direction be adjusted after installation?
The G04-2 uses a fixed GU5.3 socket, so the MR16 lamp does not tilt inside the fixture.
It works best when the fixture can be positioned directly below or close to the target, creating a primarily upward beam for trees, columns, stonework, and architectural features.
If your installation requires the fixture to sit away from the target and aim back toward it, choose a Malory well light with an adjustable socket instead.
05 Why does the G-04-2 use a full-brass body?
The G04-2 uses a full brass body, including the portion installed below grade. This gives the fixture a heavier, all-metal construction and a more substantial feel throughout the housing.
It is a good choice for customers who specifically prefer full-brass construction in an in-ground fixture, while other Malory well lights may use different housing designs to achieve different installation, aiming, or product configurations.
06 What type of bulb does the G04-2 use, and can I replace it later?
The G04-2 uses a replaceable GU5.3 MR16 low-voltage lamp.
That means the LED source is not permanently integrated into the fixture. If you want to change brightness, beam angle, or color temperature later, you can replace the MR16 lamp rather than replacing the entire well light.
This is particularly useful in landscape lighting systems because different applications often need different beam angles.
07 Should the G04-2 be installed directly under a tree?
Not necessarily.
Directly beneath the trunk can work, but slightly offset placement often produces a more dimensional result and makes better use of the adjustable socket.
For example, positioning the G04-2 a short distance away from the trunk and aiming the MR16 inward can reveal bark texture and create stronger shadow definition.
The exact distance depends on the size of the tree, beam angle, and desired illuminated height.
08 Can I use the G04-2 with an existing 12V landscape lighting transformer?
Yes, provided your system uses compatible low-voltage landscape lighting and the installed MR16 lamp is suitable for the transformer's output.
When adding the G04-2 to an existing system, also check total transformer load and voltage at the fixture location, especially on long cable runs.
A fixture can appear dim even when there is nothing wrong with the fixture if excessive voltage drop exists in the cable run.
09 Can I install the G04-2 where people or vehicles will pass over it?
The G04-2 is designed as a landscape well light, not as a vehicle-rated drive-over fixture.
It is best installed beside pathways, in planting beds, around trees, or in other landscaped areas rather than directly in vehicle tire paths or locations subject to repeated heavy loads.
10 What beam angle works best with the G04-2?
It depends on the target.
For a narrow tree trunk, column, or architectural feature, a narrower MR16 beam generally gives you more control and stronger vertical emphasis.
For a wider shrub, tree canopy, or wall area, a medium or wider beam can provide more even coverage.
Because the G04-2 already has a grated cover, using an unnecessarily wide beam can cause more light to strike the grate instead of reaching the target. For this fixture, controlled beam selection is more important than simply choosing the widest lamp available.
11 Can I install the G04-2 flush with the ground?
Yes. The fixture is intended to be recessed into the landscape so the brass top sits approximately flush with the surrounding finished surface.
However, the surrounding grade matters.
Avoid creating a depression around the fixture where rainwater can continuously collect. The area should allow water to drain away instead of turning the well light into a collection point.
12 Do I still need drainage beneath an in-ground light?
Yes.
This is one of the most important installation details for the G04-2.
A well light installed in compacted clay, a low spot, or an area that holds water can experience problems even when the fixture itself is weather-resistant.
A properly prepared installation should allow rainwater to move away from the housing. Gravel or another suitable drainage base is commonly used depending on the soil and landscape conditions.
Water resistance and site drainage solve two different problems; one does not replace the other.
13 Can the G04-2 be installed in mulch?
Yes, but do not allow mulch to cover the grated opening.
The brass top should remain exposed so heat, light, and water can move through the fixture as intended.
Mulch should also be kept from building up inside the grate because it can obstruct the beam and hold moisture against the fixture.
14 When should I choose the G04-2 instead of a regular spotlight?
Choose the G04-2 when you want:
