Malory MLR-C01 100FT 14/2 Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Wire is built for reliable 12V outdoor lighting installations. It uses 100% pure copper conductors to provide strong electrical conductivity and help reduce resistance across the wire run.
The flexible 14/2 two-conductor construction makes the wire easier to route through landscape areas, while its IP65 water-resistant and direct-burial design supports dependable use in outdoor environments.
This wire is suitable for connecting compatible low voltage transformers with path lights, spotlights, well lights, deck lights and other 12V landscape lighting fixtures. The 100FT length works well for new installations, system extensions and adding fixtures to an existing lighting layout.
For longer cable runs or higher total fixture loads, choose the appropriate wire gauge based on run length, system wattage and acceptable voltage drop.

01 How many spotlights do I need for a typical front yard?
There is no useful “one light every X feet” rule for spotlights because the quantity depends more on what you are lighting than the size of the yard.
As a practical starting point:
- Small ornamental tree: usually 1 spotlight
- Medium tree with a wider canopy: 1–2 spotlights
- Large mature tree: often 2–3 spotlights from different directions
- House column: usually 1 spotlight per column
- Narrow architectural section: 1 spotlight
- Wide façade section: usually 2 or more fixtures
- Large focal tree or feature viewed from several directions: multiple fixtures generally produce a more natural result than one very bright spotlight
For larger projects, it is usually better to use more moderate-output fixtures with controlled placement instead of trying to cover everything with a few excessively bright lights.
02 Should I use 5W or 7W MR16 bulbs in my spotlights?
Use wattage according to the lighting distance and the object being illuminated, not simply because a higher wattage sounds better.
A 5W MR16 is normally enough for:
- Small and medium trees
- Shrubs
- Columns
- Residential façades
- Short-to-medium uplighting distances
A 7W MR16 can be useful for:
- Taller trees
- Larger architectural surfaces
- Locations where the fixture must sit farther away
- Applications where more light output is genuinely required
For residential landscapes, too much wattage can create harsh hotspots and excessive brightness. Proper fixture placement and beam angle often matter more than adding wattage.
03 What beam angle should I choose?
Beam angle changes the appearance of the light much more than many homeowners expect.
15°–25° narrow beam:
Best for tall narrow trees, columns, flagpoles, and long-distance accent lighting.
30°–40° medium beam:
A versatile choice for many residential trees, architectural features, and general uplighting.
45°–60° wide beam:
Better for wider trees, broad walls, textured stone surfaces, and applications where you want softer coverage.
A narrow beam creates more concentrated intensity. A wider beam spreads the same light over a larger area and therefore appears softer.
04 Should the spotlight be installed directly under the tree?
Usually not.
Placing the fixture directly against the trunk often produces a very narrow bright area and leaves much of the canopy dark.
For many residential trees, moving the fixture approximately 2–6 ft away from the trunk produces better coverage. Larger trees may require greater distance or multiple fixtures.
The ideal position depends on canopy width, tree height, beam angle, and the direction from which the tree will normally be viewed.
05 Is one spotlight enough for a large tree?
Sometimes, but often not.
One fixture can illuminate one side of the tree effectively, while the opposite side remains dark. For a large or visually important tree, using two fixtures from different angles can create more depth and reveal the trunk and canopy instead of producing a flat silhouette.
For very large mature trees, three or more lighting positions may be appropriate.
06 How far from a wall should I place a spotlight?
For architectural uplighting, a useful starting range is approximately 1–4 ft from the wall.
Closer placement creates stronger texture and more dramatic shadows, which can work well on stone or brick.
Moving the fixture farther away gives the beam more room to spread and usually produces smoother, more even illumination.
There is no single correct distance—the wall height, beam angle, fixture tilt, and desired effect all matter.
07 Why does my spotlight create a bright circle or hotspot?
The most common causes are:
- Fixture positioned too close to the surface
- Beam angle too narrow
- Lamp output too high
- Fixture aimed too directly at the target
- Insufficient distance for the beam to spread
Before changing the fixture, try moving it farther away or changing the aiming angle. A wider-beam MR16 can also soften the result considerably.
08 Can I aim a spotlight almost straight upward?
Yes, but consider where rainwater, irrigation water, leaves, and debris will collect.
A fixture does not need to point perfectly vertical to illuminate a tree effectively. Slightly angled placement often produces better coverage and reduces direct glare.
Also avoid positioning the fixture where someone standing nearby will look directly into the lamp.
09 How do I reduce glare from landscape spotlights?
Glare usually comes from seeing the LED lamp directly rather than from the illuminated object itself.
To reduce it:
- Aim fixtures away from normal viewing positions
- Keep fixtures behind planting when possible
- Use the fixture hood to shield the lamp
- Avoid excessive upward tilt near walkways
- Use a narrower beam when you need more precise control
- Reposition the fixture instead of simply reducing brightness
Good landscape lighting should make the tree, wall, or architectural feature visible—not the light source itself.
10 Can I replace the MR16 bulb later?
Yes. Malory MR16-based spotlights use a replaceable lamp design, so you can change the wattage, color temperature, or beam angle later without replacing the entire brass fixture, provided the replacement lamp is electrically and physically compatible with the fixture.
This is especially useful if the landscape changes as trees grow or if you later want a different lighting effect.
11 Can I use RGB or color-changing MR16 bulbs?
Compatible low-voltage MR16 lamps may be used if their dimensions, voltage requirements, and operating conditions are suitable for the fixture.
Keep in mind that smart or RGB MR16 lamps may be physically longer than standard lamps and may also have different wireless-signal requirements.
Always confirm lamp dimensions and compatibility before changing from a standard MR16.
12 How much fixture load should I put on my transformer?
Do not size the transformer exactly equal to the total lamp wattage.
For example:
20 spotlights × 5W = 100W actual fixture load
A transformer should have additional capacity rather than operating continuously at its maximum rating.
As a practical design target, keeping the connected lighting load at approximately 80% or less of transformer capacity leaves operating margin and room for future expansion.
You also need to consider voltage drop on longer cable runs.
13 Does a 300W transformer mean I can connect 60 × 5W spotlights?
Mathematically, 60 × 5W = 300W, but that would use the transformer's full rated capacity and is not the layout we recommend.
At an 80% design load:
300W × 80% = 240W recommended working load
At 5W per spotlight, that is approximately 48 fixtures before considering other loads or future expansion.
Cable length and voltage drop must still be evaluated separately.
14 Does the distance from the transformer mean straight-line distance?
No.
Use the actual cable route, not the straight-line distance between the transformer and fixture.
A transformer may only be 50 ft from the last fixture geographically, but the cable could travel around planting beds, walls, driveways, or property boundaries and become a 100–150 ft electrical run.
That actual conductor length is what matters when evaluating wire gauge and voltage drop.
15 What wire gauge should I use with the spotlights?
Wire gauge depends on:
- Total wattage on the cable run
- Actual cable length
- Transformer output voltage
- Number of fixtures
- How the fixtures are distributed along the run
For shorter and lighter residential runs, 14/2 cable may be sufficient. Longer or higher-load runs may require 12/2 or heavier cable.
Do not choose cable gauge based only on the number of fixtures.
16 Why are the spotlights at the end of my cable run dimmer?
This is usually caused by voltage drop.
As cable gets longer and carries more load, voltage decreases along the run. Fixtures near the transformer may therefore receive more voltage than fixtures at the far end.
Possible solutions include:
- Using heavier-gauge cable
- Dividing one long run into multiple shorter runs
- Reducing wattage on the run
- Using an appropriate higher-voltage transformer tap when available
- Reconfiguring the wiring layout
Do not automatically use a higher-voltage tap without checking the actual voltage reaching the fixtures.
17 Should I wire all my spotlights in one long daisy chain?
Not necessarily.
A very long daisy-chain run can create greater voltage difference between the first and last fixtures.
For larger projects, dividing the landscape into multiple cable runs from the transformer often provides better voltage balance and makes future troubleshooting easier.
The best wiring layout depends on fixture quantity, load, cable distance, and transformer location.
18 How deep should the spotlight stake go into the ground?
The stake should be inserted deeply enough to keep the fixture stable while still allowing future aiming and maintenance.
Do not hammer the brass fixture body into hard ground.
If the soil is compacted, rocky, or dry, loosen the soil first and install the stake carefully. Forcing the assembled fixture into hard soil can damage the stake, threaded connection, or fixture alignment.
19 When should I aim the spotlights?
Always perform the final aiming after dark.
A fixture position that looks correct during installation may produce glare, uneven illumination, excessive brightness, or unwanted shadows at night.
For a new landscape, it is also worth checking the system again after several weeks because plant growth and seasonal changes can alter the lighting effect.
20 Can brass fixtures be installed near sprinklers?
Landscape fixtures are designed for outdoor environments, but repeated direct irrigation is still worth avoiding when possible.
Constant sprinkler impact can increase mineral deposits, water spotting, soil splash, and surface aging around the fixture.
Place and aim irrigation heads so they are not continuously spraying directly into the fixture whenever practical.
